The recyclability of a packaging product depends on the materials used and the design of the packaging itself, but also on the product that is packaged in it and the infrastructure and after-use solutions available at the packaging’s final destination. In 2019, LC Packaging and Veolia – global leader in optimised resource management – announced a strategic partnership aimed at minimising residual waste streams related to flexible packaging on a global scale.
Circular packaging programme
LC Packaging defines sustainable materials as materials that can be recycled, reconditioned and/or reused. In 2018, we distributed approx. 350 million packaging solutions, of which over 98,5% is recyclable. By using natural materials such as cardboard and jute, and where possible, mono materials or high value recyclable blend materials, we are close to our goal to make all our products recyclable by 2025.
Recyclable packaging solutions
The aim being to create a truly Circular Programme, focused on optimising the recovery and upcycling of flexible packaging after use, instead of the situation today, whereby the vast percentage of flexible packaging still ends up incinerated or in landfill. LC Packaging and Veolia Netherlands are already implementing this Circular Programme, in a test pilot phase, in cooperation with a selected number of highly motivated and sustainably minded LC Packaging
customers. Once proven, the aim is to expand this closed loop approach to the activities of many more customers, industries and supply chain partners who fall under the scope of LC Packaging’s complete flexible packaging portfolio.

Solutions
At LC Packaging we believe sustainability is the key driver to innovation. This means that sustainability is taken into consideration in every decision or development. This may apply to product developments, such as changing the colour of the material of our packaging product to make it more easily recyclable or simply choosing a different material. But this also applies to choices we make when it comes to our infrastructure.

LC Packaging has implemented cloud technology to minimise the need for local servers to one server and minimised commuting by offering opportunities to work from home via corporate VPN (Virtual Private Network). In addition, we have invested in an extensive network of videoconferencing solutions and the rollout of Microsoft applications, such as Microsoft Dynamics, Microsoft Teams and Microsoft SharePoint, to increase the real-time connectivity, information and knowledge sharing, and reduce CO2 emissions and the need for travelling.
In 2019, construction started for LC Packaging’s brand new and sustainable head office and warehouse in Waddinxveen, the Netherlands. The new office, conveniently located in the Rotterdam area, is scheduled to be completed in 2020 and the aim is to make the building as sustainable as possible (BREAAM certified) and to improve the well-being of our people and the environment.
