By 2022, we will have minimised the waste associated with our packaging
Target
We are actively testing the use of recycled materials (rPP) for the manufacture of new big bags. We have already successfully produced a bag containing 20% rPP from our own PP process waste. Together with our Partner Starlinger, we have produced a 50% rPP bag, including rPP made out of used LC Packaging FIBCs. Our cardboard packaging consists of 85% recycled content and we offer raschel bags containing 25% recycled input.
Recycled content
LC Packaging products consist of roughly 3 materials: PP/PE (plastics), jute and cardboard. 43% of our packaging solutions is made out of renewable materials and 100% out of recyclable materials. In total, we used approximately 88 million kilos of material for our products in 2019, of which 45% PP and 50% cardboard.
Materials
In 2019, we distributed more than 337 million packaging solutions, of which 98.2% was reusable and/or recyclable. Products that we identify as "difficult to recycle", and therefore non-recyclable, generated 17% of our sales, an extra motivation to look for more sustainable solutions. We are close to our goals to make all products recyclable by 2025 with product designs fit for disassembly and by using renewable materials, such as cardboard and jute. Where possible we use mono materials or high-value recyclable blend materials.
Reusable and recyclable solutions
With our GREENBangla recycling initiative, we once again recycled 80% of our virgin PP process waste in 2019. This adds up to 737 mt. Thanks to a state-of-the-art Starlinger Recycling Machine, 20 additional high-quality jobs were created for the purpose of upcycling our process waste.

By 2022, we will have significantly reduced the waste of (food) products during storage and transport in our packaging.
Target
Audited and approved by our customers!
Every day, valuable products and resources are lost in various stages throughout the supply chain. According to the UN, each year 1.3bn tonnes of food is wasted, about a third of all that is produced. High-quality packaging protects the environmental and economic investment in products and contributes to economic development and social well-being by facilitating the distribution and delivery of products to the marketplace.
2019 was marked by a large number of customer audits in our own production facilities and those of our long-term Partners. Most audits were conducted by leading multinationals in the food, nutrition and pharma industry. We are proud to share that we passed all audits. Dutch-Bangla Pack Ltd., our SA 8000 certified high-end food
safe and pharma clean FIBC production facility with a new 4,000 m2, state-of-the-art cleanroom even received a 100% score. A beautiful reward for our commitment to quality, multiple investments in our state-of-the-art cleanroom facilities and our Foodsafe and Pharma Clean Assurance Programmes.
Food safety crisis situations and outbreaks can be considered one of the largest threats for companies and even for entire industries. Only a few types of packaging and production locations meet the strict food safe and pharma clean requirements. LC Packaging believes that we can actively contribute to preventing the waste of valuable products in supply chains all over the world.
High-Quality Packaging
Quality is much more than just the strength of our packaging: It is the package as a whole, and the better the quality of the packaging, the less chance that valuable products will be lost in the supply chain. It is not only in the materials we use, the quality of transport and storage and the quality of service we provide, but also in the working conditions in which our packaging is produced and in reducing our environmental footprint. Our dedicated Quality Department ensures that we strictly comply with all quality aspects and standards, and also makes sure the health and safety impacts of all our product and service categories are assessed for improvement.

Solutions
We believe sustainability is the key element to innovation and should be taken into consideration in every decision or development. This applies to the choices we make regarding our partners, but also our infrastructure, product developments and our circular solutions.

By 2022, sustainability will be fully integrated in our innovation processes, leading to sustainable operations and packaging solutions.
Target
One of those product developments is our 100% recyclable Cardboard Sleeve, our alternative for plastic wrapping. We created unique sleeves for each calibre apple or pear to prevent damage and enhance the shelf life of the product. Because plastic is not just waste, but a valuable resource,
we worked together with our customer to design a Woven PP bag which is made of 98% polypropylene, significantly increasing its recyclability. In 2019, 83% of our turnover was generated from sustainable packaging solutions.
Product development
After-use solutions and circularity
Our plastic packaging solutions (PP/PE) are responsible for almost 70% of our turnover. We believe plastic packaging is a valuable resource, not waste (read our Statement on Packaging vs Waste). When sustainably designed, produced, distributed and handled, and with a suitable after-use solution in place, flexible packaging can be re-used, reconditioned and/or recycled and transformed into a high-value next-use application. That is why we focus on establishing a solid after-use infrastructure. Together with Veolia, we are creating a circular programme that focuses on optimising the recovery and upcycling of flexible packaging after-use. LC Packaging and Veolia Netherlands have already started the implementation of this circular programme in a pilot phase, in cooperation with a select number of highly motivated and sustainably minded LC Packaging customers.
Sustainable infrastructure
In September 2020, we will finish building our new, BREEAM certified Head Office and warehouse in Waddinxveen, the Netherlands that is built with the highest sustainability standards in mind. It will also host our cloud technology, which not only minimises the need for local servers, but also makes working together without commuting easily accessible via corporate VPN (Virtual Private Network). This technology is part of our Microsoft 365 application package.
