Our contributions
In our daily operations, LC Packaging has a direct impact on Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 8,9, 12 and 17 as set by the United Nations. However, we are committed and proud to contribute to even more of the SDG's through our actions and initiatives.

Working environment
People
Our people are our most valuable asset, which is why we want to create a safe, healthy and satisfying working environment. In times of crisis this is more important than ever and challenging at the same time. The COVID-19 pandemic impacts the surroundings in which our own employees operate, but also those of partners in our supply chain around the world.
LC Packaging’s production facilities in Bangladesh and South Africa had to close down temporarily to keep employees safe and are now working with extra safety measures to prevent anyone from catching the virus. These extra measures include awareness training and sessions on COVID-19 along with appointed doctors, regular health check-ups, high frequency cleaning of contact surfaces, wearing protective masks and gloves and thermal screening at the entrance of the facility, among others. We are happy to be able to share that we were not forced to let employees go and that everyone has continued to receive its full salary.

Job quality
People
LC Packaging makes it a priority to contribute to the economic environment of the countries we operate in, as well as the community and our own people. The quality of our job has a major impact on our lives. A stable, safe and fulfilling job is extremely important, even more so during times of COVID-19. High quality jobs help people to develop their skills, fulfil their ambitions and make them feel useful in society. To ensure job quality, LC Packaging takes into account three areas that contribute to ‘job quality’ worldwide, identified by the OECD: earning quality, labour market security and quality of the working environment.

By 2022, we will have created at least 300 additional high quality full-time jobs in developing countries.
Target
Job creation 2020: 103-1, 103-2, 103-3
GRI 401: 103-1, 103-2, 103-3

Quality jobs
Since open unemployment tends to be relatively low in most emerging economies, the main challenge is not a lack of jobs. Rather, it is the lack of quality jobs that raises greatest concerns (OECD). As LC Packaging employs 1,444 employees in developing countries (Jan 2021), such as Bangladesh and South Africa, our 2022 target is set on creating high quality jobs in these economies.
Since 2017, we have added 582 additional high quality jobs in developing countries. An increase of 106 jobs compared to 2019. OECD research shows that people who hold quality jobs are generally more healthy and more productive. In 2020, our production facility Dutch-Bangla Pack Ltd. (DBPL) in Bangladesh which employs 1,262 employees (January 2021), reported a reduction of 8.15% in its employee turnover rate and a 5.45% reduction of absenteeism since the implementation of the new SA8000 Standards in 2018. There has also been a 6.4% increase in productivity.
Besides creating high quality jobs, facilitating gender equality is an important factor in creating quality jobs. LC Packaging strongly believes in the empowerment of our employees and is proud to have become a member of the 7 Women’s Empowerment Principles, committing to working collaboratively to foster business practices that empower women especially. Over the years, LC Packaging has already introduced many initiatives to improve the wellbeing of and promote equality for women, especially in developing countries.
To further contribute to female empowerment of women in Bangladesh and to improve their financial independence, DBPL has implemented a digital payroll system for all of its Bangladeshi factory employees in 2020. With this system, every DBPL employee has been assigned a bank account to which their salaries are directly deposited. Additionally, all employees have been supplied with a cheque book and bankcard, allowing them to cash out their wages at their own convenience or to directly transfer funds to pay their bills. The bankcards can also be used for payments at the on-site fair priced supermarket; the Happy Shop.

Employee development
People
All of LC Packaging’s 1,700 employees receive regular performance and career development reviews. Regularly evaluating performances provide a stepping-stone to identify and discuss areas where performance is peaking and where it can be improved, as well as an opportunity for expectations to be reinforced or clarified. 77% of our employees says that their performance is evaluated at least every six months during a formal evaluation or during an interim meeting in which evaluation of performance is the main topic.
To make learning and development even more accessible, in October 2020, we have launched the LC Academy for our employees working in sales, support and distribution. LC Academy is a one-stop-shop to personal and professional growth and development; A platform where employees can find all available online and offline courses, webinars and training opportunities. LC Academy is also a place to interact and connect with colleagues and get inspired by readings that broaden ones horizon and for example TED Talks on leadership, innovation and so on. Since its first introduction, approximately 50 courses have been added with a participation rate of 95.8%. The course completion rate is 79.2% and the pass rate is 99.6%.
By implementing our own online training tools, we have saved 877 hours of commuting, created 247 better skilled employees and have decreased our environmental impact by more than 14 MgCO2.

People
In January 2017, LC Packaging founded the LC Supports Foundation (LCSF) to contribute to the improvement of the environment and well-being of communities in which our company operates, and contribute to the Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) set by the United Nations. With the help of local partners, we have set up wonderful projects. In this chapter you will find a selection of our activities in the past year. For a full overview, please read our Statement of Income and Expenses.
In September 2020, the LC Supports Foundation has donated an amount of €5,000 to the Red Cross to help the victims of the explosion in Lebanon. The Red Cross is providing medical care to the victims of the Beirut explosion. The Lebanese Red Cross hosts more than 1,000 families and supports them with food and toiletries.
LCSF and the LC Packaging South Africa team have started a new partnership with the Wilderness Foundation Africa (WFA), a conservation organisation working to protect and sustain wildlife, wilderness and youth empowerment – among others- through integrated conservation and education programmes. Together, we will work on empowering vulnerable young people from the local community with skills to help them with pathways to various livelihood opportunities. Next to financial support through LCSF, the local LC Packaging team in South Africa will be strongly involved throughout the year. Read more about our partnership.
The project commenced in May 2021 and replaces the War On Waste project, which unfortunately had to stop due to the fact that they no longer received government subsidies.

LC Packaging teamed up with our Sustainability Partners EcoVadis, Veolia, Starlinger and Social Accountability International, and our own production facilities WorldBag and Dutch-Bangla Pack Ltd. (DBPL), to organise our very first Virtual Conference around the topic of sustainable FIBCs for our international key accounts.
After two successful years, LC Packaging once again launched the so-called Green Heart Campaign during the 2020 Holidays to raise extra budget for our projects and to promote the projects supported by the LC Supports Foundation. Customers were introduced to three projects and asked to choose the project closest to their heart. LC Packaging donated an amount of money, usually spent on Christmas presents, to the project of the customer’s choice. Over 135 customers from different countries participated, raising a total of approximately €2,350.
Implications COVID-19
The COVID-19 pandemic has a major effect on our daily lives. This is no different for projects supported by the LC Supports Foundation. This year, donations were often used for COVID-19 related initiatives. To keep students and their families as safe as possible, the Waste Pickers of Dhaka programme organised awareness sessions
In 2020, LC Packaging South Africa supported a charity called ‘Chefs With Compassion’ with custom-made No Time To Waste big bags. The organisation started to work with local chefs who were unable to find work as their industry took a massive hit during the national lock down as a result of the Covid-19 Pandemic. They go to the local fresh produce market and ask if they can receive the items that would otherwise be discarded. They then sort, salvage and cook nutritious meals for the less fortunate. They were provided with food parcels and essential clothing to help them get by after losing their already limited income due to COVID-19.
For each participant in the Sustainable FIBC Virtual Conference, LC Packaging promised to make a donation to the LC Supports Foundation to support the Waste Pickers of Dhaka project. Altogether this has resulted in a total amount of €2,500.
